Was een beetje gefrustreerd geraakt door hoe Jack mij noemde.

Han.

De VH-UXG 'Riama' is gecrashed. De eigenaar, zijn vrouw en vier passagiers zijn omgekomen. Van het toestel is niets meer over.

Opmerkelijk verhaal ...

The pilot, Des Porter (aged 68 ) survived a 1954 accident near Brisbane in the same model of plane. His father and brother died in the crash. He found a similar aeroplane some years later in a hangar, disassembled, then restored it. The tail section of VH-UXG includes parts from another Dragon which had been owned by his father that was destroyed in a different, non-fatal, 1954 accident.

Farewell to six of the best.

In the end, it was three words constantly repeated for six "extraordinary" people which said it all.

"We love you".

Over two hours at the Minnippi Parklands, the original site of the Porter family farm and homestead, almost 2000 people farewelled Des and Kathleen Porter, John and Carol Dawson and Les and Jan D'Evlin.

Private funerals for the six will be held in the coming months; this was a chance to gather and share memories for everyone the six had touched.

The three couples died after Mr Porter's beloved 1934 De Haviland Dragon DH 84, one of just four in the world, crashed in the Sunshine Coast hinterland earlier this month while on a joy flight.

The three couples shared love of adventure, good company and flying in the 'Riama', as was recounted by the family and friends speaking at the memorial, each making their own mark on the plane.

There was "Captain Des" who considered himself the “custodian” of the rare and unique aircraft and John Dawson, his best friend and “first officer” who counted racing legend Dick Johnson among his friends and always carried a cleaning rag in his back pocket and checked passengers had clean shoes before boarding the Dragon.

Kathleen Porter was in charge of entertainment, amusing her friends with her wicked and sometimes outrageous sense of humour as well as being Riama's lead cheerleader, happily regaling the curious with the plane's history.

Carol Dawson helped organise; and with 46 years of service in administration roles at the Mater Hospital, the “woman who never stopped smiling” made sure everything was packed and ready to go.

Jan D'Evlin, with her love of travel indulged by working with Virgin Australia, music from the 60s, food and wine and Golden Retrievers, most recently Cooper, embraced the groups spirit of adventure and at times made up boarding passes for 'Porter Air' as souvenirs.

And Les D'Evlin, 'Pop' to his grandchildren and daughter-in-law and just 'Dad' to his son Shane, who always put his wife of 34 years first, was the details man, with the ability to take in all the intricate details of all the things he took an interest in – from boats to cars and of course aircraft.

Gary Young, Mr Porter's cousin, told the group that Des's last words on the radio transcript from that final flight on October 1, recorded just after 2.30pm, were “thanks guys”.

Mr Young extended that thanks to everyone who searched for tirelessly for the couple on behalf of all the family and friends of six beloved people.

The Caboolture Aero Club had wanted to show their respect to their friend and member, Des Porter, with a fly over, however Brisbane air traffic control withdrew permission for the group late on Thursday, citing too much commercial traffic.

The noise of those commercial jets could be heard throughout the ceremony, which seemed to be a fitting tribute to a group of six who loved to fly.

But transportation of all kinds, given the many different classic cars, motorcycles, aviation themed caravans and unique vehicles which filled the Minnippi Parklands carparks, was a common thread between the three couples and their loved ones; and many stories were told of their love of racing and the history of automobiles.

Members from the “Virgin Australia family” were scattered throughout the crowd, their scarlet uniforms neatly pressed in honour of their lost colleague, but colleagues, friends and family of all six stood together in solidarity, each “grateful for having known extraordinary people” and grieving for their loss.

Scott Porter, who had taken several deep breaths before speaking of his father in front of the gathered crowd, finished his speech with an epitaph which echoed through the group.

“To Captain Des and the last passengers of the Dragon VH-UXG who always lived life to the full, you'll be missed more than you could ever know,” he said adding “rest in peace”, his voice cracking.

As Bette Midler's Wind Beneath my Wings played, the group of loved ones stood and offered support to each other, laughing as they recounted their memories of the six and hugging when the emotion became too much.

“Today is hopefully just a reinforcement of the love and respect these people had for all of them,” Mrs Porter's nephew Chris Salisbury said.

“I hope people leave here with smiles and feel it was an uplifting experience. These were very special people”
