:) :) :) mooi

Platt-LePage XR-1

XR-1 was the first American military helicopter to takeoff and hover with good control. The work of German aircraft designer Henrich Focke inspired two American engineers, W. Laurence LePage and Havilland H. Platt, to design the XR-1. Focke's Focke-Wulf Fw 61 helicopter employed a pair of main rotors turning atop pylons, or outriggers, jutting away from both sides of a central fuselage. During the late 1930s, the Fw 61 was flown to set a number of helicopter world records. In February 1938, W. Laurence LePage witnessed the Nazi test pilot, Hanna Reitsch, fly the Fw 61 in front of several thousand people inside a Berlin sports arena called the Deutschlandhalle. Platt tried to negotiate with Focke to purchase the rights to build the Fw 61 under license but the German engineer insisted on too many restrictions and no agreement was reached.

ATAC Predator 480

The Predator 480 was an unconventional high performance crop-duster. Advanced Technology Aircraft Company contracted with Scaled Composites to design and build a proof-of-concept crop-duster. Designed by Burt Rutan, it was owned by ATAC. It never made it into production because of a severe design flaw in the main wing.

Planet Satellite. "Registered 26/4/1949, broken up in 1958"

m55 Geophysica

41-800x800.jpg

The M55-Geophysica is manufactured by the Myasishchev Design Bureau (MDB). The aircraft can carry heavy payloads in the order of 1500kg and can operate at an altitude of up to 21-22 km for about five to six hours. The cruising ground speed is about 750 km/h.

The aircraft has various bays where the instruments can be installed. The main bay is longer than five metres and can accommodate very large instruments. The maximum runway length required is less than 1000 metres (typical 860/910m) with a maximum take off weight of 24,000 Kg. The M55 Geophysica is an all-weather aircraft. The American ER-2, WB-57 and the M-55 are the only operational stratospheric research aircraft in the world at the present time. Whilst the ER2 and the WB-57 have longer radii of action than the Geophysica, the Geophysica exceeds the ER-2 capabilities in payload, power supply, manoeuvrability and is less dependent on ground conditions. The ER-2 would not be able to take measurements in "lee-waves" because it could not perform the necessary vertical up and down manoeuvres.
